Listen Up!

Today we're going to talk about one of the hallmarks of empathy...listening. Active and engaged listening is so impactful. It is the difference between feeling heard and feeling brushed off.

How do you know when someone that you are talking to is actively listening? How can you become a better listener?

One of my favorite tools is "What I'm hearing you say is...". Playing back what you are hearing for the person who is talking is an excellent way to not only let them know that you're listening, but also that you want to be sure and understand. Sometimes what you heard is not actually what the person is trying to say and so playing it back can help clarify any miscommunication and make way for extraordinary progress.

Where are your opportunities for active, quality listening today? Do you have a meeting where you can practice this skill? Maybe you have a relationship in your home that could benefit from this practice. Maybe you have to go to the grocery store and can practice with the cashier or someone else in line. The possibilities are endless. I'd love to hear any thoughts or ideas that you guys have around active listening and empathy!
